Flag Day is celebrated on June 14th, and is also known as “Flag Birthday”. It is a day that we get to observe and celebrate the official day that the United States of America approved the design for its first national flag in 1777.
The holiday was proclaimed in 1916 on June 14th by Pres. Woodrow Wilson as the official date for Flag Day, and in 1949 the U.S. Congress made the date an official holiday and named it National Flag Day. Although it is not recognized as an official federal holiday, some states still celebrate the holiday pretty heavily. In Pennsylvania, they celebrate Flag Day for almost an entire week, and the president delivers an address that proclaims the week of June 14 as National Flag Week, and encourages all Americans to fly U.S. flags during that time.
Depending on which state you live in, the celebratory activities may differ. You can find activities such as parades, essay contests, picnics and ceremonies to attend. If you are looking for a simpler way to observe and celebrate this holiday, simply hanging a U.S. flag will do! That is the most common way that people celebrate flag day since it is not a major holiday, and activities in certain states are scarce.
Here is a website with a list of 21 ways to celebrate this holiday! Celebrate Flag Day!
