As summer starts to settle down and the weather is about as hot as it will get, it becomes the perfect time to go camping and explore the outdoors. There are a few things that you should know before heading out on your camping adventures, especially if you are new to camping.
Plan Meals In Advance
- Whether you are staying for one day or a few days, plan your meals out. It is always better to come prepared than not, and that is especially relevant when it comes to food. There are tons of options for types of food to bring on your trip. If you are staying a day or two, some cuties-oranges, small bags of chips, and sandwiches will do just fine. However, if you are staying for a few days or longer the freeze dried meals might be better. They are complete meals that are meant to keep you feeling full for quite a while, and all it takes to make them is hot water! You can find items like these at your local outdoors store, or places like Academy Sports, REI, and Dick’s Sporting Goods.
And with that- don’t forget your eating utensils!!
Let People Know
- Let others know that you are going on a trip! This is generally said for any type of trip that you are going on but it is particularly important when a trip outdoors is happening. Have a map of your trail and campsite with a list of phone numbers to call to give to people so they know where you are and who to call in case they have any questions or need to reach someone if you don’t come home on time. With that being said, let people know when you are leaving and when you will be back! Doing this can save you from some pretty scary situations.
Lights
- It is necessary for multiple reasons to pack extra batteries, I’m sure you don’t want your flashlight to run out of battery. It might also be in good interest to pack a lantern as well as a flashlight in case the batteries do go out. On that same note, pack extra lighter fluid and lighters (or your choice of firestarter) in the instance that you are having trouble starting a fire. You could also look into battery or solar powered fairy lights to have diffused lighting inside the tent, there’s almost nothing worse than needing something in the tent and not being able to find it.
Safety
- Keep a good eye on your surroundings and the wildlife, especially at night. Pack extra food and water, and a blanket in case it is colder than you thought it might be. Know what services are available to you, you could need them in the event of an emergency. Look at the signs posted at the beginnings of the trailheads, typically they have warnings of things to look out for, notices if the water levels are high, and a list of emergency numbers to call for that specific park. Packing a small first aid kit can also come in handy and should always be packed. Be aware of the weather, and be fire safe. If it is dry season be especially careful about your fire practices.
